When It's Time to Get a New Point of Sale System for Your Business

Shopping Blog

Your company's point of sale, or POS, system is vitally important for your business, as this system not only handles customer payment at the register, but it is also typically used to track inventory and to generate sales reports for your products and services. While a basic POS system can work for a small business or one with limited inventory, there are times when it's good to consider investing in a new POS system, for your own benefit and for the sake of your customers. Note a few signs that it's time to investigate an updated and more modern POS system for your business.

Rewards system

If you're thinking of introducing a rewards system for your customers, or if you have already rolled out such a program, consider if your POS system needs an update. Many stores offer a rewards card that is scanned to collect points or generate coupons, but if a customer needs to have the cashier enter the rewards information separately from your current POS system, this can make it cumbersome to use. Customers may then get irritated at the register, especially if something is overlooked or entered incorrectly. Update to a POS system that scans cards and that also easily figures discounts, free items, and the like, so that customers are happy using the rewards system and so that your line at the register moves as quickly as possible!

Manual entries

Consider how many items your cashiers need to enter manually, and whether this is becoming bothersome to cashiers and to those waiting in line. A new POS system might allow for more items to get entered quickly and automatically, rather than needing a cashier to manually enter their price. If you've increased your inventory, but are using an older system with limited memory and options on a cashier's touch screen, it's probably time to update the POS system.

Size of screen and display

Today's modern point of sale systems usually have very large and colourful screens for both cashiers and customers to see and use. This is so customers can easily see items on a screen as they're being entered to keep track of their charges and ensure all pricing is correct. Larger screens for the cashiers also make it easier for them to quickly find items while ringing up your customers. If you have an older system with smaller screens that are difficult for cashiers or customers to see, it may be time to upgrade to something easier to see and to use.
